Al-Shabaab insurgents battled Somali government troop and Kenyan forces in separate battles in southern Somalia, officials said. In a clash early Monday, al-Shabaab militants attacked a government base at Qura's Jome in the Bakool region of southwestern Somalia, the Shabelle Media Network reported. Al-Shabaab gained control of the town near the Ethiopian border after several hours of fighting. Insurgents attacked Kenyan troops and members of the paramilitary Raskamboni group Sunday night at the airport in Kismayo. A few minutes later, al-Shabaab attacked another military base at Kismayo University. No casualty figures from any of the clashes have been released.
