The Libyan government says it will seek assistance from the United Nations or from its allies to investigate Saturday’s mass jailbreak in Benghazi. More than 1,000 prisoners escaped from the al-Kweifiya prison. Justice Minister, Salah al-Marghan briefed the media in Tripoli on Sunday. The escape came on the same day that protesters stormed the offices of Islamist-allied parties in Libya’s main cities. A government security official said those who escaped either faced or had been convicted of serious charges. 18 have been arrested, while some returned on their own. It wasn’t immediately clear if the jailbreak was linked to the protests, or if the inmates received outside help. Al-Marghan said they all managed to escape.
