Kuwait City - Arab Today

Head of the Swiss delegation to the 2nd Syria's donors conference said Monday Kuwait played an outstanding role in understanding the humanitarian crisis in Syria, affirming its full support to the conference, scheduled tomorrow.

Manuel Bessler, a diplomat, told KUNA on the eve of his departure to Kuwait that the meeting is of paramount importance in dealing with the Syrian crisis from a humanitarian perspective and to cope with the scale of the tragedy in Syria, especially since it will include UN agencies, donor countries, and civil society organizations.

Bessler explained that Kuwait's outstanding role in dealing with the humanitarian crisis caused by the events in Syria, reflected the desire of the political leadership to address the Syrian crisis, said that Kuwait has fulfilled its obligations it made during the 1st donors conference, held in the north Gulf country last January.

The Swiss diplomat stressed that the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria required urgent intervention from the international community, especially the neighboring countries, which also suffer from the burden of growing number of Syrian refugees. The official stressed that the Syrian crisis is worsening in light of the escalation of violence that kill a large number of people coupled with grave human rights violations.

Bessler pointed out that the conflict has gone out of control and extended to ethnic minorities. Bessler also revealed that Switzerland was planning to pledge USD 30 million in the upcoming conference.

The amount will be go to the International Committee for the Red Cross, UN World Food Program, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the Office of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), he added
