Mexico city - Kuna

Kuwait City and Mexico City are to sign a twinning agreement during a visit by Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard to Kuwait, October 16-19, with the overall objective of bolstering cooperation between the two friendly nations. The Kuwaiti Ambassador to Mexico Samih Johar Hayatt told KUNA Wednesday evening that Mayor Ebrard would hold meetings with a host of political leaders and officials during his visit.Ebrard for his part said he opted for the visit in view of the special relationship with Kuwait and the great potential for more cooperation. This would be a historical agreement, he added, since it would be the first Mexico signs with an Arab nation. The ambassador and the mayor met on Wednesday in the Mexican capital and discussed preparations for the visit.Ebrard's visit would be the first by a senior Mexican official to the State of Kuwait since establishment of diplomatic ties 36 years ago.His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad's two official visits to Mexico last year resulted in a leap in volume of relations and exchange, most indicative of which was the inauguration of the Kuwaiti Embassy in Mexico and a Mexican Embassy in Kuwait. As Kuwait celebrated its national holidays back in February, Mexican Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa was among the elite guests as the representative of Mexican President Felipe Calderon. Many Mexican officials had visited the country since, and many Mexican activities were also held. The twinning agreement states the two nations are to hold and exchange activities of a cultural, national, or historical nature. There is also to be stress on bringing the new generations closer and encouraging further two-way interaction and exchange.Virtue of the six-article agreement, the two countries are to set up liaison offices and teams, and these would organize and cooperate on projects and activities within the two states' budgets and with heed to laws and regulations in both. The agreement would take effect as of date of signature. It would be initialed by Kuwaiti Asema Governor Sheikh Ali Al-Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah and Mexico City Mayor and Head of Government of the Federal District Marcelo Ebrard.
