Kuwait calls to free the Middle East of Nuclear weapons
New York - Arab Today

The State of Kuwait has stressed to the United Nations Disarmament Commission importance of political will to intensify and accelerate collective efforts to free the Middle East of nuclear weapons.

This came in a speech, late on Tuesday, by First Secretary of the Permanent Delegation of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations Abulaziz Amash Al-Ajmi, during meetings of the Committee on the 2016 Disarmament Discussions, according to (KUNA) news agency.

He stressed in his speech that a free zone of nuclear arms and other weapons of mass destruction can actively boost international efforts to create a world free of such weapons.

He said "the Middle East is still far from achieving this objective, as a result of Israel's (intransigent) position on the nuclear weapons' (disarmament), its refusal to accede" to the relevant international treaties and subjecting its facilities to inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

He emphasized the important of the guiding principles' role in determining the appropriate actions for confidence-building measures and their implementation at the regional and international levels in the field of conventional weapons, adopted by the Disarmament Commission in 1996.

The First Secretary of Kuwait's Permanent Delegation to the UN also affirmed that those actions and measures should focus on the principles contained in the UN Charter, such as non-interference in the internal affairs of States, peaceful settlement of disputes, sovereign equality between all member states and non-use of force or threat against the territorial integrity of any state.
