King Abdullah II
Amman - Arab Today

King Abdullah II of Jordan on Tuesday called for intensified international efforts to end the stalemate in peace talks between the Palestinians and the Israelis, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

The Jordanian leader made his remarks at a meeting in Amman with visiting Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Paul Ryan, during which the two discussed several regional issues and bilateral ties.

There should be greater efforts to engage the stakeholders in the peace process and end the stalemate, said the King, adding that any talks should be based on the two-state solution and the international resolutions leading to the creation of an independent Palestinian state.

The King said lack of peace fuels tensions and extremism in the Middle East.

On Syria, the King reiterated the call for a political solution, referring to the challenges Jordan is facing due to hosting a large number of Syrian refugees.

The king also appreciated the U.S. support to the Kingdom in various areas.

The senior U.S. lawmaker believes that Jordan plays a key role in the fight against terrorism, stressing continued support for the country.

Ryan also hailed Jordan's efforts to bring about peace in the Middle East.

Also Tuesday, Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour and Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh met with Ryan and discussed regional issues and bilateral ties.
