Jebali: "Opposition's role will be guaranteed"

Mr. Hamadi Jebali, Ennahdha member in the National Constituent Assembly (NCA) and candidate for Prime Minister in the Interim Government, said that the role of the opposition "will be guaranteed". "Being in the majority does not mean giving satisfaction to the minority and yielding on some points," he admitted, on Wednesday, in a statement to TAP news agency, after the third session of the Constituent Assembly's works. "Freedom is guaranteed to all parties within the Constituent Assembly. The point is to abide by the rules of the democratic game," he argued, adding that "there is no way of speaking of imposed projects or domination by the majority. In all democracies, the rule is that of the vote, while ensuring freedom of speech and criticism. "On the type of the future political system in Tunisia, Mr. Jebali answered: "as a group in the Constituent Assembly, Ennahdha will advocate the parliamentary regime.  "We will certainly arrive at a consensus on this issue. Otherwise, we will submit this idea to the vote." The Ennahdha Secretary-General chose not to make a statement on the line-up of the Government, "to respect the progress of the Constituent Assembly's work." After the election of the speaker of the Constituent Assembly, his two deputy speakers, the bureau members of the two commissions on internal rules and provisional organisation of public authorities, the NCA members will be elect the President of the Republic who, in turn, will task a prime minister to form a new government. Reminding of the atmosphere that prevailed in the Chamber of Deputies in the era of the one political discourse and the single voice, Mr. Jebali pointed out that the political landscape has changed from the very first session of the Constituent Assembly "which is now characterised by pluralism," adding that the opposition will have a "major" role to play within the Constituent Assembly.
