Rome - KUNA

Italy will continue encouraging European Union efforts to achieve dialogue amongst warring political powers in Egypt as it demanded the Syrian government to allow UN investigations into claims of the use of chemical weapons in a recent deadly attack on civilians. Italy will continue "urging a revision of the EU's cooperation policy with Egypt," Italy's Foreign Minister Emma Bonino said in a statement on Friday after talks with her visiting Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davotuglu, who is currently on a European tour aimed at discussing the two troubled Arab nations. EU foreign ministers, during talks in Brussels two days ago, also stressed the need for the international community to practice immediate mediation in order to convince Egyptian political factions to undergo "dialogue that ends the current national state of emergency and prevents further violence," added Bonino, who referred to Turkey's influence towards the goal. Separately, both ministers expressed extreme anxiety and condemnation of Wednesday's attack close to the Syrian capital of Damascus which killed hundreds, and affirmed the need for the international community to be swiftly provided with accurate and objective information regarding the possibility of the use of chemical nerve agents. They called on the Syrian government to allow UN inspectors currently in the country immediate and free access to the site of the attack. Furthermore, Bonino underlined that the UN team's assessments, which will include the true accounts of the incident, will provide the nature of any sort of response or possible options available to the international community.
