Tehran - Arabstoday

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has announced that the Islamic Republic has achieved the technology of processing embryonic stem cells. On Wednesday, Ahmadinejad unveiled the plaque of processing embryonic stem cells' technology which is used in the treatment of incurable diseases. Stem cell research is one of the most promising research areas in modern biomedicine. However, due to moral and ethical debates, it remains a controversial issue in many regions of the world. Stem cells have been shown to have significant capability to develop into a plethora of different cell types and work as a repair system to replenish cells with specialized functions. Iran is among the top 10 countries in the world that produce, culture and freeze human embryonic stem cells. In 2008, Iran became the leading country in the Middle East working in the field of stem cells, due to its innovative scientific investigations in this regard.
