IAEA General Conference session to opens in Vienna Monday

A regular annual session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) opens in the Austrian capital on Monday. For five days, representatives of 159 member-countries will be discussing matters concerning nuclear safety, the development of atomic power engineering, research and technologies in the atomic sector. A Russian delegation is led by Sergei Kiriyenko, General Director of the RosAtom state corporation, who will address those present on the first day of the General Conference proceedings. On Monday, Kiriyenko will hold his first meeting with the new US Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz. They are to sign a Russia-US agreement on scientific and technical cooperation in the peaceful uses of atomic energy. Kirieyenko is also scheduled to hold talks with the directors of atomic energy agencies of France and Jordan,and converse with the Energy ministers of the Republic of South Africa, Ukraine, and Bangladesh. Sergei Kiriyenko is to meet with IAEA Director-General Yukiya Amano. The IAEA General Conference, at its present session, is expected to approve an extension of Amano's powers for another four-year term. The session is to come to a close on September 20.
