Cairo - Xinhua

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Sunday expressed deep concern about renewed violence in Egypt, calling on both sides to exercise restraint. "I am deeply concerned about the continuing reports of violence in Egypt," the top U.S. envoy said in a written statement."I urge Egyptian security forces to respect and protect the universal rights of all Egyptians, including the rights to peaceful free expression and assembly," she said. "We call upon the Egyptian authorities to hold accountable those, including security forces, who violate these standards."She also urged the protesters to refrain from acts of violence. According to latest figures from the Health Ministry of Egypt, the clashes between protesters and police in Cairo have left 10 people dead and 505 others injured.Egypt on Sunday witnessed a third consecutive day of clashes between protestors and security forces that erupted in front of the cabinet and parliament buildings. Protestors tried to storm into the buildings, setting fire to cars and part of the buildings. A total of 106 members of the security forces were injured after protestors hurled stones and Molotov cocktails at them in downtown Cairo.Violence returned as the parliamentary election is proceeding in the most populous Arab nation, the first since the fall of former President Hosni Mubarak in February in anti-government protests. The three-stage election, set to end on Jan. 10, 2012, went to its second stage on Wednesday and Thursday.
