Kabul - Xinhua

French Defense Minister Gerard Languet visited Afghanistan on Saturday, a day after four French soldiers were killed and 15 others were injured by an Afghan army soldier, local media reported. "The French Defense Minister arrived in capital city of Kabul Saturday to determine whether the county's military involvement and training mission in Afghanistan will continue after a shooting incident that left four French soldiers dead on Friday," a private television channel, Tolo News aired in its new bulletin. An Afghan army soldier opened fire on French troops in Kapisa province, 65 north of Kabul in the insurgency-hit country, killing four soldiers and injuring at least 15 others. According to local media reports, the French soldiers were unarmed when the incident happened. Such incident also happened in the past. Two other French troops were killed by a man dressed as an Afghan soldier on Dec. 29 also in Kapisa province for which Taliban insurgents claimed of responsibility. Hours after the Friday's incident in Afghan Kapisa province, France President Nicolas Sarkozy announced that the country is suspending all military training in Afghanistan. In a similar incident, a man wearing Afghan army uniform opened fire on U.S. soldiers in southern Zabul province killing a U.S. soldier and injuring five others on Jan. 8 this year. Over 3,900 French soldiers have been serving in Afghanistan within the framework of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) to fight Taliban-led insurgency and help stabilize the conflict-ridden country. Majority of the French troops have been serving in Kapisa province. A total of 28 NATO soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since beginning this year.
