Ex-USSR President Gorbachev warns against military strike on Syria

Military action against Syria would bring about unpredictable consequences, Mikhail Gorbachev, former USSR President and Nobel Peace Prize winner said in calling on U.S. diplomats to try to dissuade President Barack Obama from intervening. “Consequences will be unpredictable,” he said in an interview with Danmarks Radio (DR) on Monday. “Russia has been conducting a coherent policy on the Syria conflict. It calls to follow the path of diplomacy and use United Nations tools. Together, we must understand what is going on in Syria and what can be done. No country should tell all the rest what to do in this situation.” Gorbachev said “I know some say the conflict is to be resolved by weapons. This is absurd. The key responsibility for finding a solution rests with the United Nations and its Security Council. I call on all member countries of the U.N. Security Council to use its possibilities to the full.”
