Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s provocative article in the New York Times, published two days ago, has angered Saudis, who have launched a campaign on Twitter, defending the Kingdom’s reputation.
Many Saudis attacked Zarif for describing the Kingdom as a terrorism sponsor.
Anwar Eshqi, president of the Middle East Center for Strategic and Legal Studies, speaking to Arab News, said Zarif exploited the US media to create a large impact on American public opinion against the Kingdom. He selected this time to write an aggressive article to exploit the 9/11 Bill.
He said Zarif claims are without evidence. “In this case, the Kingdom has every right to sue the Iranian foreign minister in US courts for false allegations against Saudi Arabia.”
Eshqi added: “Moreover, the Kingdom has evidence proving that Iran was involved in the terrorist attack in Alkhobar. This evidence could be shown to the world to indicate which country supports terrorism. It is expected that the Kingdom will reply to Zarif’s claims to clarify the facts and present the true terrorist face of Iran.”
Tweets from Saudis described Zarif as a “clown” who tries to persuade Western countries with outlandish claims. They said the whole world knows which countries support terrorists and work to create unstable regions in the Middle East.
Saudis called for urgent action against Iran for its support to the Houthis and Shiite militias in the Arab world.
In another tweet, Mohammed Al-Dawish, a Saudi lawyer, wondered about the real goal of the Iranian foreign policy.
Abdullah Al-Monaifi, a citizen, tweeted: “Iran has nothing to say to the world. Therefore, its foreign minister has resorted to accuse the Kingdom with unbelievable claims.”
Abdul Aziz Al-Thanyan, a former member of the Shoura Council, attacked Iranian claims against the Sunnis. “Because of its sectarian nature, it is normal for Iran to attack a major Sunni country such as Saudi Arabia,” he tweeted.
