Peace building should be aimed at helping post-conflict countries achieve their own development and promote lasting peace, said a Chinese envoy here Wednesday.
Liu Jieyi, China's permanent representative to the UN, made the remarks at a UN General Assembly meeting on peace-building architecture.
Liu said as far as peace-building is concerned, close attention should be given to addressing poverty, under-development and other major underlining issues and problems that give rise to conflicts and crises.
He said peace-building should comprehensively promote the efforts in post-conflict countries for the reconstruction in all sectors, and promote economic and social development in those countries concerned.
Peace-building is an intervention designed to prevent the start or resumption of violent conflict by creating a sustainable peace.
Liu said in carrying out peace building efforts, the international community should respect the sovereignty and ownership of the countries concerned, and provide constructive efforts in light of the needs and wills of those countries.
He also said the priority of peace-building work should be adapted to the actual conditions of the countries concerned so as to ensure the assistance will meet their needs and achieve ultimate outcome.
"China is willing to work together with other members to promote peace building and peace keeping and make great contribution to peace, development, and progress of mankind," he added.
