China: it respects British people's choice to leave EU

China has said it respects the choice of the British people after the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in a historic referendum.

China has consistently developed its relations with the UK and the EU from a strategic height and a long-term respective, Hua Chunying, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs was quoted by local media as saying on Friday.

China supports Europe in choosing its own way of development, she stated, emphasizing that a prosperous and stable Europe is in the interests of all sides.

China hopes the UK and the EU could soon reach an agreement on Britain’s exit, Hua added.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said he will step down by October after the Leave vote won with 52 percent to 48 percent for Remain. 

Hua declined to comment on Cameron's resignation, saying that it is a decision by the people of the United Kingdom and by Cameron himself.
