Boston police commissioner to resign

The reported impending departure of Edward Davis as Boston's police commissioner was greeted positively by minority law enforcement members. The Boston Globe reported the department and a source close to the commissioner said Davis will announce his resignation and future career plans at a Monday press conference. It wasn't known when Davis' departure will be effective, the newspaper said. "I think it's the right thing for him to do in terms of the city being able to move forward," said Larry Ellison, president of Massachusetts Association of Minority Law Enforcement Officers. The association passed a vote of no confidence and publicly called for his resignation this year, saying Davis hasn't done enough to increase minority representation in the department's upper ranks. Davis, 57, has headed the 2,100-officer force since 2006. The Globe said its source said while Davis has yet to finalize his next career steps, he plans to teach part-time at Harvard University.
