Tensions are high in Bangladesh, following one of the most violent national elections in the country’s history. Protesters from the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, the country’s largest Islamic political party, clashed with security forces in Rajshahi on Tuesday. Riot police responded by firing rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. Supporters of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party also took to the streets of the city, calling for a general strike. Meanwhile, police say they conducted raids and arrested three leading opposition members. It was not immediately clear why they were detained or if any formal charges would be brought against them.
