The Final Communique of the 27th African Union Summit, which wrapped up its activities in Rwanda on Monday evening, asserted its respect for human rights and women empowerment in Africa.
The statement called on the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) to closely work with relevant AU bodies to protect and promote human and peoples' rights in the African continent.
It stressed the necessity of fully implementing instruments of human and peoples' rights and relevant national policies, in addition to recommendations issued by AU bodies on human rights.
The statement also pledged the member states' commitment to back efforts to spread the culture of human rights via declaring the coming ten years "a decade for human and peoples' rights in Africa".
African leaders also endorsed a new roadmap dubbed Catalytic Framework to end AIDS, TB and Eliminate Malaria in Africa by 2030.
