Armed men gangrape policewoman in eastern Indian sate

A policewoman was gangraped by three armed men on a highway in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand Friday, one day after a woman photographer was gangraped by five men in Mumbai, said local media Saturday. The incident took place on National Highway 75 in Latehar district early on Friday morning, when the policewoman and her family were carrying the body of her brother-in-law, who was killed a few days earlier, to a relative's house, said local daily The Hindu online. Police said they have detained a few suspects but no arrests have been made so far. The victim had left the state capital Ranchi late on Thursday night with her parents, daughter, in-laws and the body of her brother-in-law who had been shot at by unknown assailants on Aug. 20, and was heading to her relatives' village in Garhwa district when their vehicle was stopped, along with others', near a bridge by armed robbers. Three armed men allegedly stopped several vehicles, looted valuables from the passengers near the bridge and pulled the policewoman out of the vehicle and gangraped her, said the report. A 22-year-old woman photographer was gangraped by five men when she and her colleague were shooting pictures of a factory ruin in central Mumbai Thursday. The gangrape in Mumbai triggered anger in India as it was reminiscent of a horrific gangrape of a 23-year-old medical student by six men on a moving bus in Delhi last December. The case of Delhi gang rape is still pending in court which is yet to open trial of the five accused. The sixth had hanged himself in jail.
