
Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit stressed the importance of greater cooperation between the pan-Arab body and the UN agencies in the coming period, particularly in areas that affect the daily lives of Arab citizens.
Giving a word at a roundtable meeting on the role of regional organizations in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Abul Gheit underlined the difficult conditions in the Arab region during the current stage that necessitates searching for solutions to the economic and social problems in Arab countries, particularly in those affected by crises, said Spokesman for the AL Secretary General Mahmoud Afifi.
During the meeting that was held on the sidelines of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly, Abul Gheit stressed the necessity of setting up an overall plan for sustainable development that focused on eliminating poverty, improving education and securing health care and potable water, the spokesman said.
He underlined the role of regional organizations in support of efforts exerted to implement the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the spokesman added.
Abul Gheit also reviewed plans and strategies launched by the Arab League to achieve sustainable development, including the Arab Declaration to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that was adopted at the 27th Arab Summit in Nouakchott, the spokesman said.
