1000 migrants taken into custody in police raid on Moscow market

About 1000 migrant workers were detained Monday in a police raid on a market in southeast Moscow, officials said. The migrants, many of whom are from central Asia, will be held until their criminal records and migration permits can be checked, RIA Novosti reported. Russian authorities have recently increased crack downs on illegal immigration in response to rising nationalism, the Russian news agency said. The raid at the Sadovod market also discovered illegal sales of alcohol and counterfeit goods, Interior Ministry spokesman Marat Bugulov said.
