The Sri Lankan police on Wednesday fired tear gas to disperse a group of protesting cricket fans near a cricket stadium in Dambulla in the Central Province.

The fans blocked the streets and protested after not being able to enter the stadium to watch an international cricket match between Sri Lanka and Australia.

A tense situation developed between the police and protesting fans. It was reported that some fans pelted stones at the police.

The police then used water cannons and fired tear gas to disperse the protesters.

Tickets for the ongoing one-day international series between Sri Lanka and Australia has been sold out, resulting in many fans facing disappointment.
