Baghdad - Arabs Today

Iraqi police regained control over Al Abra area in Tel Afar city on Sunday, the police command said.

In a statement, units of Iraqi federal police, backed by warplanes, managed to retake the city as part of a military operation to oust Daesh militants from Tel Afar, 60 kilometers west of Mosul.

In a televised speech at dawn of today, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider el Abadi announced the start of Tal Afar military operation.

The operation comes six weeks after Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city, was liberated.

Mosul was declared liberated on June 10 after a fierce nine-month battle between Iraqi security forces and Daesh with Hashd and Peshmerga securing outlying towns and areas.
