Denmark to deploy up to 200 soldiers to Estonia

Denmark is prepared to send up to 200 soldiers to Estonia as part of NATO's plan to deploy four multinational battalions to the Baltic states and Poland, the country's prime minister unveiled Friday.

"Denmark contributes with up to 200 soldiers to enhanced presence in Estonia within the British framework," Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen wrote on his Twitter account ahead of the NATO summit in Warsaw on Friday.

The Four multi-national battalions, a force of about 3,000 to 4,000 troops, will be deployed to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland and led by Britain, Canada, Germany and the United States, respectively.

The battalions will be under NATO command and the deployment are due to be in place in early 2017.

In mid-June, NATO defence ministers agreed to increase the bloc's presence in the Baltic region as one element of a more comprehensive adaptation of NATO deterrence and defence in light of the Ukraine crisis.
