Excessive drinking of beer has detrimental impact on the health of the Czech people, local media reported Friday citing a new research.

With a comparison of data on diet and epidemiology of 42 European countries, the research by experts from the Faculty of Sports Studies of Masaryk University in Brno, the Czech Republic, said that the Czechs should pay much more attention to alcohol, and also to the consumption of cereals and potatoes.

Pavel Grasgruber, lead author of the research report, said that beer consumption is the most destructive factor in the Czech diet, far worse than eating any other food.

He said number of Czech people who have pancreatic cancer and kidney disease are the highest according to a European statistics, and this result is no doubt has relation with alcohol.

Diseases of colon, rectum and bladder also affect Czechs much, which may be largely due to the high consumption of alcohol and beer in general.

Grasgruber said alcohol destroys virtually the guts and probably also contributes to the high incidence of obesity.

The research report also criticized the high consumption of cereals, especially bread, and potatoes of Czech people. The cereals are problematic because the starches contained in the refined wheat could significantly increase blood glucose levels, which leads to the risk of cardiovascular diseases, obesity and diabetes second type.

According to the report, situation of potatoes is more complicated. Potatoes contain the most aggressive carbohydrates in all foods, but on the other hand, as a good source of vitamin C and protein, potatoes are the richest common source of tryptophan, which is the rarest essential amino acid in the human diet.

Grasgruber said in dietetics, it is very important to maintain a healthy level of food consumption and avoid extremes in the selection of food.
