Cancer patient ordered to stop yard sales

An Oregon woman who has been holding garage sales to pay medical bills from her bone cancer treatment said city officials forced her to shut down the operation. Jan Cline of Salem said she held the weekend sales in her back yard to keep them from bothering neighbors after she was diagnosed with a terminal form of bone cancer earlier in the summer. A complaint from a neighbor led the city to order her to stop the sales, KATU-TV, Portland, Ore., reported Thursday. Cline said she was told a city law limits residents to three yard sales per year and violations can carry fines of as much as $300. "We make such an effort of making it back here (the backyard) so that it's not goobering up the neighborhood, so it's not like a garage sale all laid out day after day after day," she said. A Community Development Department official told KATU-TV he is looking into the situation to see if there is a way for Cline to continue her sales without running afoul of the law.
