Rabat - Arab Today

The construction process of the new University Hospital of Laâyoune (CHU) is speeding up. A call for tenders has recently been launched by the Ministry of Equipment for the design, monitoring, and control of the hospital’s construction works, with an estimated budget of MAD 830 million.

Announced as part of the Southern Provinces Development Plan in November 2015, the new University Hospital of Laayoune is one of the most anticipated structuring project in the region of Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra, since it meets an increased need for healthcare. Expected to be completed by 2021, the new hospital will reduce the pressure on other hospitals, especially at the CHU in Marrakech.

This project, part of an greater structural framework for upgrading Morocco’s healthcare system, has several basic objectives, most notably the creation of a new regional health development center, which is intended to contribute to the promotion of medical aid training.

The hospital will be conceived as an urban project in its own right, with its own public spaces, functionalities, and specialized spaces but also a capacity for permanent transformation. “The adaptation of the future building to technical, medical and functional evolutions which are difficult to anticipate constitutes the guarantee of the quality of the project,” reads the call for tenders published by the ministry.

The facility will have 14 surgical operating rooms, including a maternity unit, a cardiovascular wing, an emergency room, and a psychiatric and mental diseases department.

The Moulay El Hassan Belmehdi hospital in Laâyoune has also recently been equipped with new high-tech equipment, including a high-performance scanner for the radiology department, as part of the initiative to bolster healthcare infrastructure in the region. Several health centers will also be set up with the aim of strengthening the provision of care in all parts of the city and improving access to health services for all sectors of society.

In the same context, the medical staff has been trained in new skills. The number of specialized doctors in the Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra region rose from 28 to 91, 65 of which were in the Laâyoune province. In addition to the Moulay El Hassan Belmehdi hospital, the Laâyoune region has another large health facility, the Hassan II specialty hospital with 143 beds, as well as nine health centers
