UNESCO chief welcomes awarding Nobel to ICAN

UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova welcomed the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the International Campaign for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).
"It is a resounding call to global responsibility and a stronger diplomacy for peace", she declared in a statement Friday.
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome) was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1996, as the only structure left standing in the area where the first atomic bomb exploded on 6 August 1945.
UNESCO Headquarters houses the "Nagasaki Angel" statue, a miraculously salvaged sculpture which originally adorned the façade of a cathedral in Urakami Shudo, Nagasaki, Japan.
"Whilst UNESCO congratulates ICAN, we also commit to renewing our efforts to share the lessons of history and build the defenses of peace in the minds of men and women," the statement added.
