President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi
Jakarta - Arab Today

Wrapping up an Asian tour, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi will visit Indonesia on Friday.

Sisi's tour also included Singapore and China and would be concluded in Jakarta on Saturday. His visit to Indonesia is the first for an Egyptian president since 1983.

Sisi will hold a summit meeting with his Indonesian counterpart Joko Widodo, to be followed by an expanded meeting grouping the Egyptian and Indonesian delegations. A number of memorandums of understanding will be signed on bilateral cooperation in several fields.

President Sisi is expected to visit the HQ of the General Secretariat of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to discuss with the secretary general ways to enhance bilateral relations on the economic track, especially in light of promising investment opportunities in a number of development projects in Egypt.

Egypt was the first country to recognize Indonesia's independence. That was on August 17, 1945. Egypt was also the first country to sign a friendship agreement with Indonesia in 1947. Both countries are considered founders of both the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the Islamic G8.

Egyptian-Indonesian relations are deeply-rooted. Both countries maintained cooperation in several fields and adopted similar stances as regards many regional and international issues.
