Pakistan's former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
Islamabad - MENA

Pakistan's former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif stood trial on Tuesday before an anti-corruption court in Islamabad to face corruption charges.

His court appearance comes a day after he returned home from London, where he visited his wife who is being treated there, the ABC News reported.

Some Sharif followers started chanting slogans in his support inside the courtroom, annoying the judge, Mohammad Bashir, who then asked Pakistan's three-time premier to leave as his lawyers were there to represent him.

Sharif was disqualified on July 28 by the Supreme Court following a probe that determined he had concealed financial assets.

The corruption case had stemmed from documents leaked from a Panama law firm, which appeared to show that senior officials, including Sharif, had undisclosed assets.

Some independent analysts criticized the decision as it has been issued from one side upon the army's order that has been controlling Pakistan for a long time and still exerts influence.
