Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Abdel Aati
Dar El Salam - Arab Today

Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Abdel Aati attended a ceremony on Tuesday to mark the launch of 30 new water wells at the Tanzanian province of Sami.

Abdel Aati said the wells are offered by the Egyptian government to the people in Tanzania.

Some of the wells are equipped with solar-powered pumps and some are powered with diesel fuel or operate manually to provide potable water and serve inhabitants in three isolated provinces in Tanzania, he added.

The Egyptian official said the project was carried out by a major Egyptian company specializing in groundwater work at a cost of 900,000 dollars.

The project came as part of a memorandum of understanding which was signed by the Egyptian ministry and the water and irrigation ministry in Tanzania in December, 2009, according to Abdel Aati.

In line with the memo, Egypt is to dig 70 wells across Tanzania to provide potable water for isolated citizens in poorest areas in Tanzania, he said.
