Abu Dhabi - WAM

A series of Al Ayala dances will be held across Abu Dhabi, showcasing the emirate and the UAE's cultural identity as part of Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority's Music Programme, 2015/16.

The first display will be held at the East Plaza at Abu Dhabi Corniche on 11th December at 5 p.m. with regular performances continuing until May, 2016.

Generally known as the ‘stick dance', this traditional UAE folk dance is accompanied by drumming and performed by two rows of dancers facing one another. Dancers are positioned close together in rows, signifying unity and co-operation amongst tribal people.

Inscribed in 2014 UNESCO's representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritages of Humanity, the Al Ayala Dance Art reflects the UAE's rich cultural heritage and traditions.

Al Ayala is still performed in both urban and rural communities across the country for different social and national occasions. As a sincere expression of life and customs, it represents the very essence of the Emirates, combining sung poetry along with dancing and drumming.

The TCA Abu Dhabi Music Programme has incorporated the Al Ayala performances in order to pursue its goal to revitalise the traditional performing arts of the UAE and to encourage cultural diversity through an on-going intercultural exchange.

Sara Alshakar from TCA Abu Dhabi said, "We are very happy that the sounds of our rich UAE heritage will be heard in Abu Dhabi. It is the aim of TCA's Music programme to promote and preserve the Emirates' folklore. We hope that the series of event will convey to the public the feeling of pride of being an Emirati and the desire to share our valuable culture with others."
