A diagram of Carbon Sequestration Abu Dhabi is due to host the United Nations` meeting on Carbon Capture and Sequestration later this week. Delegates from 64 countries will travel to Abu Dhabi for a workshop on the Modalities and Procedures for Carbon Capture and Sequestration in geological formations.
The meeting is a follow-up to the much-anticipated 16th Conference of Parties, which was held in Cancun in 2010, which recognised Carbon Capture and Sequestration as a potential Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) to be used in the fight against global warming. Carbon Capture and Sequestration is hoped to be finally approved at the COP17 meeting scheduled to be held in Durban later this year, following the resolution of outstanding technical issues, some of which will be addressed in Abu Dhabi this week.
Christiana Figueres, the Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, said: “The urgency of the climate challenge means we need to explore all the technologies at our fingertips. CCS can become a key pillar of global climate action in the future. This workshop seeks to address some of the key technical issues related to the inclusion of CCS in the Clean Development Mechanism, the world's premier tool for mobilizing carbon finance for developing countries."
