Solar-powered water pump pilot project The Ministry of Energy is partnering with the Ministry of Environment and Water to harness the solar power to run pumps of underground water wells. The pilot project was launched at the Ministry of Environment and Water's Al Hamraniya Experiments Station in Ras Al Khaimah using photovoltaics (PV) to pump 7,5 cubic metres of water per hour.
The Ministry of Energy said in a press release today the project is in consistence with the UAE Vision 2021 towards developing non-oil sectors by using sustainable energy applications and underscores the ministry's strategy to diversify the mix of energy sources, mainly the renewable energy.

DEWA commissions new Dh118 million substation at Dubai Airport Free Zone
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has marked a significant milestone in its mission to install and launch substations, with the commissioning of an Dh 118 million substation at Dubai Airport Free Zone (DAFZ) this month.
The station, which is 132/11 kV, has a capacity of 150 MVA, and was built at a cost of Dh 86 million. The cost also includes extending ground cables that link the station network, at Dh32 million, to meet the growing demand for electricity.
"To achieve the directives of Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and our commitment to become a sustainable world-class utility, we are strengthening our infrastructure and service facilities as per the highest international standards. This is to meet the basic needs of the people and the business community to further establish Dubai as a global economic hub," said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD '&' CEO of DEWA.
"The project further strengthens the capacity of DEWA's networks for the transfer of electricity to DAFZA. The ground cables have been extended by 6.9 km to link the main substation, with the 132/11 kV substation in Al Bustan, and the 132/11 kV substation in Al Qusais. This will further enhance the efficiency and reliability of DEWA's networks across vital growth areas and ensure continuity and stability of supplies to different consumers at all times," said Al Tayer.
He added that the stations feature the latest digital technology, which will strengthen the reliability and efficiency of the stations and eventually support Dubai's constructions plans and ambitions for economic growth. DEWA has 20 132/11 kV substations under construction, in addition to ongoing work on developing substations currently operating in the network by increasing their capacity by using the latest globally-adopted technologies.
