The diamond weighs in at an astonishing 128.54 carats To celebrate the 175th anniversary of iconic jewellery brand Tiffany & Co. the Tiffany diamond took a tour from New York to Japan followed by Dubai. The stone is one of the largest and finest yellow diamonds in the world at 128.54 carats and it dangles on a drape of more than 120 carats of white diamonds. Its facets break most records, totaling 82 (24 more than the traditional 58-facet brilliant cut).
Discovered in the Kimberley diamond mines of South Africa in 1877, the 287.42-carat rough stone was acquired almost immediately by Tiffany's founder Charles Lewis Tiffany, who bought it to Paris where his in-house chief gemologist Dr George Frederick Kunz moulded its’ cushion-shape brilliant cut.
The stone was used to promote the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany's, for which the diamond was worn by its second and last ever model Audrey Hepburn, before going on the market in 1972 for $5 million US dollars, the equivalent of $25.8m or AED Dhs 94.8m today. No buyer was found and it was kept off the market and off the neck of any woman ever since.
The Tiffany Diamond will be on display until January 9 at Tiffany's Dubai Mall boutique before returning to the jeweler's flagship Fifth Avenue store in New York City where it can be spotted- according to local legend- glimmering from the other side of the street.
