Rio Ferdinand was hit with a 2 pence coin
London - Umar Farooq

Rio Ferdinand was hit with a 2 pence coin The English Football Association has launched an investigation after Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was struck by a coin thrown from the crowd. The incident happened after Robin van Persie scored an injury time free-kick to give the visitors a 3-2 win at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. TV pictures showed Ferdinand celebrating before the two pence coin cut him above the eye, leaving blood to stream down his face.
In a statement, the FA said it is investigating the incident with a spokesperson adding: "It is disappointing that after a great game and advert for the Premier League that we are discussing this issue. We will work with the clubs and authorities to identify those responsible and support the strongest sanctions available, including life bans. To witness Rio Ferdinand leaving the field with a cut above his eye to receive treatment is appalling."
The FA will liaise with Greater Manchester Police, their own crowd control advisors and the match referee on the incident.
The defender jokingly tweeted about the incident, writing: "what a result,3points! Sweet! Whoever threw that coin, what a shot! Can't believe it was a copper 2p....could have at least been a £1 coin!"
Earlier in the game, objects were thrown at striker Wayne Rooney as he took a corner.
