Sanaa - Ali Rabea
Protesters burn an effigy of a US aircraft during a demonstration in Sanaa Security forces in Yemen arrested three men reported to be affiliated to al-Qaeda in the province of Marib, east of Sanaa. The arrests come after clashes between police forces and protesters, as thousands took to the streets of Yemen to demonstrate against deadly US drone strikes which have killed dozens of people over the last two weeks.
Protesters said the attacks, which are carried out by means of remotely controlled unmanned aerial vehicles – otherwise known as drones – frequently kill innocent civilians instead of militants.
Eyewitnesses told Arab Today that some protesters were seen holding white al-Qaeda flags as they chanted against US drone attacks.
Seven people were wounded in Wednesday's clashes.
Meanwhile, in the country, the intelligence chief for the southern Yemeni city of Aden and his son were gunned down in their car Wednesday in a suspected al-Qaeda hit, a security source said.
The official said Colonel Ali Hadi came under fire at the wheel of his car from gunmen in another vehicle. His son died on the spot while he died of his wounds in hospital.
The assailants, who fled, were believed to be al-Qaeda militants, said the official, who asked not to be named.
Although weakened, al-Qaeda militants still carry out hit-and-run attacks against army and police targets.
