Cairo - Ramadan Ahmed
General Prosecutor Abdel Meguid Mahmoud An investigation has been ordered into charges filed by Muslim Brotherhood lawyers accusing protesters of assaulting and beating 99 of its members during last Friday's demonstration in Tahrir Square, Egypt. Anti-Brotherhood protesters including activists Mamdouh Hamza and Ahmed Mahran have also filed
charges against Muslim Brotherhood leaders of instigating their supporters to attack the peaceful protesters.
Egypt's General Prosecutor Abdel Meguid Mahmoud ordered the investigation over the clashes, which took place
during a demonstration criticising President Mohammed Morsi's performance in his first 100 days. After
defendants in the Battle of the Camel trial were acquitted, the Muslim Brotherhood and the Freedon and Justice
Party called for protests against the public prosecutor.
The public prosecution announced on Monday the start of investigations into 53 complaints filed over the clashes
that took place in Tahrir Square on Friday.
The complaints accuse acting Freedom and Justice Party head Essam al-Erian, pro-Brotherhood preacher
Safwat Hegazy, Mohamed al-Beltagy and other leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood of mobilising their supporters
to use violence against peaceful demonstrators, leading to clashes, injuries and destruction of property.
The prosecution heard the testimonies of injured protesters, who stated they were beaten by Muslim Brotherhood
supporters. The prosecution said they counted 147 injured protesters, two of them where hit by round shots, while
most of the injuries were broken bones and wounds.
Three persons were arrested after the clashes for burning three buses waiting to transport Muslim Brotherhood
supporters.
