Tunisians protest against Salafis and extremism
Tunisia - Nabil Zaghdoud

Tunisians protest against Salafis and extremism   Thousands gathered in Tunisia in front of the National Constituent Assembly in protest of extremism and of what they termed the "Salafist invasion of the political arena," following the controversy stirred up by the visit of Egyptian preacher Wagdy Ghoneim.
Protesters condemned violent attacks on citizens, including national figures, politicians, activists, and media figures. They also condemned the recurrence of violence in different parts of Tunisia and the escalation in the prevalence of an extremist rhetoric. The demonstrators also called for the interim government to take necessary measures to stop its spread. which could derail Tunisia's transition to democracy and threaten the gains made by the revolution.
The protesters demanded preserving the identity of the people and protecting the nation and its unity. They also asked to complete the democratic independent election and activate the independent higher electoral commission.
Activists gathered in front of the National Constituent Assembly for the march. The location also played a significant role in the Tunisian revolution in January 2011, as people gathered in the area to protest against ousted former president Ben Ali and demand that he step down.
