Hundreds of Egyptian protesters chant slogans during a demonstration in Cairo Egypt will hold its first parliamentary election since the February ouster of president Hosni Mubarak in three phases from November 21, the state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper said. The newspaper, in the first edition of its Sunday issue, quoted the head of the electoral committee Abdel Muiz Ibrahim as saying a senate election will follow on January 22.
"A proposed timetable is in place for parliamentary and senate elections, with the first stage of parliamentary elections starting on November 21," it quoted him as saying.
The election, which will be held over three stages, will end on January 3, he said.
But the ruling military, which took power after the popular overthrow of Mubarak, has yet to confirm the dates. It will announce the date in the last week of September, a military source told AFP.
The last parliamentary election, in November 2010, was swept by the National Democratic Party, which a court dissolved after Mubarak's overthrew.
Islamists such as the Muslim Brotherhood movement, which formed the Freedom and Justice Party, are expected to make gains in the election at the expense disorganised secular groups who want more time to organise parties.
