Human rights group call for the implementation of non-binding UN resolutions Rabat – Judy Sabbagh The Moroccan Coalition Against the Death Penalty has held its second meeting, demanding Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane and Justice Minister Mustafa el-Ramid ratify United Nations resolutions and cancel the country’s controversial capital punishment law.
Parliamentarians and advisers reportedly prepared a petition to collect signatures, sources told Arabstoday, adding that some members of the government had already signed. Representatives from Morocco’s ruling Justice and Development [PJD] party had reportedly not joined the Coalition.
The Moroccan authorities executed 111 defendants in 2012.
The UN General Assembly has already issued a non-binding resolution calling for the suspension of the death penalty worldwide.
