Mikati finds Syrian footage of murdered Lebanese ‘disgusting’

Prime Minister Najib Mikati Beirut – George Chahine Prime Minister Najib Mikati has denounced the footage broadcasted on Syrian television showing the bodies of the Lebanese killed in Tel Kalakh three days ago. In a statement to Arabstoday, Mikati said this sort of behaviour is against human rights: “We condemn these disgusting scenes aired on Syrian television.”
Asked about the kidnapped Lebanese in Syria, the Prime Minister said: “When the government decided to avoid the Syrian conflict, we aimed to protect the Lebanese people and our country.
“From this position, we should not intervene in Syria’s politics in order to avoid an expensive conflict. In the meantime we try to maintain communication to bring back those who were kidnapped to their homeland.”
On the eve of a meeting with Western ambassadors, Mikati said to "Arabstoday: "We have already confirmed that Lebanon's economic, health, social and educational capabilities are affected by the Syrian refugee population, which is estimated to reach 150,000 individuals.”
Mikati urged the international scene to intervene to help Lebanon overcome the consequences of the Syrian crisis.
A number of pro-rebel Lebanese militants in the Syrian area of ??Tal Kalakh were killed in an ambush on a road between the Lebanese-Syrian border.
Syrian television showed a number of bodies with their ID on their chests to prove their Lebanese nationality.
Mikati will visit Italy and Greece this week, where he will meet his counterparts to discuss the latest development in Lebanon.
