The Egyptian Constituent Assembly
Cairo – Akram Ali

The Egyptian Constituent Assembly Cairo – Akram Ali  The Head of the Egyptian Constituent Assembly has disapproved the latest decision of his own Assembly to merge martial law with the civil legal system. This move led to disputes between the members of the Assembly. Some consider that it would guarantee justice while some others prefer to keep martial law away from civil procedures.
Assembly member Sobhy Saleh said that merging martial justice to the civil system would prevent military trials of civilians. This would also allow the martial courts to be under the supervision of the Court of Cassation.
This decision is unprecedented for the army. It would allow soldiers and officers to appeal against their verdicts.
Assembly member Mohammed Saad Gawiesh wants a new law that condemns people who have separatist intentions or appeal for foreign intervention in Egypt. He stated that those people should be charged with treason.
He explained he will submit a written proposal of the law.
Gawiesh refused to use the phrase 'ethnic origin' when talking about the definition of equality in the Constitution. Instead, he said that all citizens are equal, regardless of their sex, language, religion, social status or disability.
Member of Freedom Committee Manal al-Teby said that she submitted a proposal for equal opportunity for women in politics. She also urges for elimination of all forms of discrimination against women.
