The shipment of weapons was allegedly funded by Gulf Arab countries
Damascus - George Al Shami
The shipment of weapons was allegedly funded by Gulf Arab countries Fifteen fighters from Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah were killed on Sunday in clashes in the ?Sayeda Zainab suburb of Damascus, as large convoys of ? government troop s accumulated on the capital’s airport road in preparation to storm the Yarmouk refugee camp, according to activists.
The activists said Syrian military convoys and Hezbollah fighters in addition ?to other militias were gathering on Damascus International airport road in preparation to what seems ?to be the storming of Yarmouk camp.?
According to the activists, there is massive movement in the camp after government forces warned the remaining residents of Yarmouk and Palestine ?camps as well as the al-Hajar al-Aswad camp last Friday that they must evacuate as the army is planning to storm the areas that are currently under the control of opposition fighters.
Meanwhile, Syrian opposition sources said 400 tons of weapons were sent via ?Turkey to Syria to enhance the capabilities of their fighters in confronting the army ?after what is suspected to be a chemical weapons attack over areas controlled by the opposition in ?Damascus.?
A source said a shipment funded by Gulf Arab countries, arrived after passing through the Hatay region of Turkey in the last 24 hours and is one of the biggest shipment received by the opposition ?since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began two years ago.?
Opposition activist Mohammed Sallam who witnessed the passage of the shipment from a location ?in Hatay, said 20 trailers passed through Turkey and were being distributed ?across weapon storages of a number of battalions in northern Syria.
A senior officer in the Gulf and Western-backed Supreme Military Council, an umbrella group for rebel units, said there had been an increase in rebel-bound arms shipments coming into Turkey, particularly since the reports of a chemical assault.
Weapons still waiting to cross into Syria included more sophisticated anti-tank guided weapons, the officer added, without elaborating.
He, and other sources, said money for the shipments came from the Gulf, without naming specific countries.
Rebel units operating in northern Syria range from moderate Islamists to hardline jihadists and include Liwa al-Islam (The Division of Islam), Sukur al-Sham (The Hawks of Syria), The Free Martyrs of Syria, Ahfad al-Rasul (The Grandsons of the Prophet) and Ahrar al-Sham (The Freemen of Syria).
Analysts say they have struggled to hold onto advances against Assad's Iranian and Russian-armed forces and his monopoly on air power.
