A meeting in Egypt’s Constituent Assembly
Cairo - Akram Ali

A meeting in Egypt’s Constituent Assembly Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi called for a meeting with leaders of the civil opposition on Sunday to discuss the country’s new constitution. The non-Islamist leaders had been discussing the subject in a joint meeting presided over by former presidential candidate Amr Moussa when they received Morsi’s invitation.
Opposition leaders said they would not sanction the current draft constitution, with Moussa describing it as “baffling” and "unacceptable".
Morsi’s meeting aims to formulate constructive proposals for the constituent assembly, sources said.
Meanwhile, Egypt’s controversial Constituent Assembly is set to begin discussions on Saturday of the nearly-completed draft constitution.
Morsi said the constitution is currently the most important political and social issue. "Conversations about the draft constitution have become a necessity," he said.
A series of meetings to discuss this issue have been organised with representatives of Egypt’s civil society. Those attending include: public figures, political parties, human rights centres and youth and religious groups.

Leaders of Egypt’s non-Islamist political forces met on Friday for an urgent meeting in the office of former Secretary General of the Arab League Amr Moussa.
The meeting was held to reach resolution on the conflict with Islamists in Egypt.
