Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mourad Medelci is happy with UN's move Algiers – Hocine Bousalah The Algerian foreign ministry has backed the United Nations' latest resolution, aimed at helping to resolve the political crisis in Mali. On Thursday, the UN Security Council unanimously ratified resolution number 2085, authorising the deployment of an African-led International support mission in Mali, for one year. Amar Belani, spokesman for the ministry told reporters that the resolution "is consistent with a comprehensive approach adopted by Algeria since the outbreak of the crisis in Mali, as it gives the multi-faceted crisis a multi-dimensional response."
According to Belani, the measure has all the "essential elements needed to resolve the crisis, and encourages Mali's pivotal role in finding any solution." He added that the move is a realisation that al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and the Tawhid and Jihad movements in West Africa are a genuine danger to the African region."
Belani believes that targeting the terrorist groups and those related to organised crime, is a necessity for the mobilisation and success of the Malian army.
Meanwhile, Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mourad Medelci says that the partnership agreement between Malian Islamist group Ansar al-Din and the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (NMLA), is a milestone on the path of a political settlement to the crisis in Mali.
In a statement to the press, Medelci said there was a need to take "additional steps," to resolve the crisis in Mali, and praised the United Nations for giving priority to the political solution in Mali.
