Former presidential candidate, Ahmed Shafiq Cairo – Akram Ali Former presidential candidate, Ahmed Shafiq, reportedly met with several lawyers on Tuesday evening. This came after Shafiq was banned from standing for elections by the recently approved "political isolation" law.
Shafiq consequently submitted a complaint to Egypt's Supreme Presidential Elections Commission (SPEC), and also filed a lawsuit against the ruling.
Shafiq and his associates reportedly regarded the law as "contradictory to the established principles of freedom, which should not target an individual". They also cast doubt on the intentions behind implementing the law, as they believe it was specifically prepared in order to rule out Shafiq from running for president.
After the meeting with his lawyers, Shafiq met with his campaign members who had contacted delegates in different governorates to protest against the court's decision. Shafiq told them that he would take legal action and that popular pressure on the state should be addressed as it affected the sovereignty and impartiality of the law.
Shafiq said: "This law threatens the democratic path of the revolution."
He also said that he will continue his legal battle to rejoin the race.
Shafiq’s campaign page on Facebook said that his supporters would organise demonstrations in the governorates of Minya, Assiut, Dakahlia and Cairo.
