Rome - AFP

Hungry tourists who pause for a quick snack in the street while visiting Rome’s historic monuments, such as the Colosseum, face fines of up to 500 euros (645 dollars) from Tuesday, Italian media reported. “It is forbidden to encamp or erect makeshift shelters and stop to eat or drink in zones which have a particular historic or architectural value,” reads the ordinance adopted by Rome city council, which came into force on Tuesday. The ban, which lasts until December 31, will be enforced with fines ranging from 25 euros to 500 euros. Similar bans have already been adopted in several other Italian cities, such as Florence and Venice, around historic and cultural sites in the city centers.
