Spain to cut 52% of train routes

The Spanish government has decided to do away with medium-distance train lines and replace them with buses to save money, officials said. Medium-distance trains, which travel 62 miles or less, account for 52 percent of Spain's routes, but are used by just 16 percent of passengers, ThinkSpain reported Saturday. The move is expected to save the country more than $67 million, lawmakers said. Regional governments can opt to keep medium-distance trains running, but at their own cost
